Club code for Excellence

In the practise of martial arts, your aim should be to achieve excellence. Make this your personal goal. You owe it to no one but yourself to perfect your skills to the best of your ability. Consider the following suggestions to help you reach your fullest potential. 

 

 

 

1. BE OPEN-MINDED 
Be receptive to everything! Having an open mind will enable you to progress 
in your study and appreciation of Martial arts. 


2. 
BE COMMITTED 
There are no short cuts to achieving excellence. Being the best you can be 
requires hard work and commitment to training. Make time for study of your art. 


3. 
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! 
Practice your skills at every opportunity. Don’t confine your training to class 
times. You can practice elements of technique at home or in your break times 
at work. Look for those chances and make good use of them. 


4. 
MAINTAIN BASICS 
Basic techniques are the foundations of your martial art, so work to keep those 
foundations strong. Make sure you practice your basic techniques on a regular 
basis. 


5. 
LISTEN AND OBSERVE 
No matter how much you know or how talented you are, always keep listening 
and observing. You can learn a lot from others whether they are instructors or 
complete beginners! 


6. 
BE DISCIPLINED 
To achieve excellence requires self-discipline. Keep focused on your training 
and attainment of skill and know that through discipline and perseverance, you 
will become the best you can be. 


7. 
UNDERSTAND 
Don’t just go through the motions of technique. Understand why you are applying 
that technique. Question and analyse every movement so you know exactly why 
you use that technique. 


8. 
GAIN FITNESS 
Work all the different elements of your fitness to build strength, power, flexibility, 
stamina, speed, control and co-ordination to help you apply your skills correctly. 


9. 
VARY TRAINING 
Vary your training routine every couple of weeks. Do not become too dependent 
on a particular method. Train alone and with fellow practitioners. 


 

10. FEEL THE ENERGY 
Be aware of the chi - your internal vitality. Notice the energy moving as you 
train or work on a particular technique. Learn to work with this energy. 


 

11. BE ADAPTABLE 
Be prepared to adapt your technique to suit your situation. Have a flexible 
approach to all the applications. 


12. 
LEARN FROM MISTAKES 
Let mistakes serve their purpose! Learn from them, dont let them de-motive you,

let them Motivate you to put them right and strive to be better!!


13. 
BE PATIENT 
Achieving excellence takes time. You may move forward and then take several 
steps back. Just be patient and know that you are progressing. 


14. 
KNOW YOURSELF 
Accept your limitations and know your strengths and weaknesses. Work within 
your current capabilities but always with the aim of progressing to the best 
of your ability. 


15. 
SET GOALS 
Set yourself attainable goals on a regular basis. Keep your goals firmly in 
mind to maintain motivation. 


16. 
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF 
Self-belief counts 100%! Know that with consistent effort, you can achieve 
greatness as a martial artist. 


17. 
SEEK GUIDANCE 
Always be humble and never think you know too much. Whatever your level, you 
can learn from those around you. Seek guidance to attain more. 


18. 
STUDY ALL SOURCES 
Learn from other styles of martial arts. Take what is useful. Study other practitioners. 
From this, you will gain a greater understanding of your Karate. 


19. 
CONCENTRATE ON SPECIFICS 
Break down the components of a technique to concentrate on the specific movements. Work 
on perfecting each aspect, whether it is a foot position, balance, angle of 
movement etc. Work on each section diligently. 


20. 
BE POSITIVE! 
Your approach to learning requires a positive mental attitude so that you can 
excel with confidence. Positivity makes all things possible!
